Your hair is one of the first things people will notice about you, which is why the search for the perfect colorist should not be taken lightly suggests Ian Michael Black, Aveda Global Artistic Director, Hair Color. “If you find the right colorist, your hard work will be rewarded with a lasting relationship that is great for your hair and your psyche,” Ian says.
Here, Ian offers 5 tips for finding that perfect match:
Tip #1: Test the Waters Schedule consultations with a few candidates. The goal of these meetings is to evaluate whom you best get along with, who has all the right skills and who can bring out your best self.
Tip #2: Tune In At your consultation, really listen to the prospective candidate so you can gauge his/her personality. A sign that it’s a good fit is if you think you would enjoy talking to this person outside of the salon. You don’t have to best friends, but if you like your colorist and begin to trust him or her, then you will certainly feel more confident about asking questions and taking chances.
Tip #3: Play Show and Tell Be as specific as possible about your color wants, needs and concerns. And be prepared with images of hair color that you love. The right colorist will be enthused by your preparedness. They should be engaged in this process and really listen to you, while also offering their professional advice.
Tip #4: Get Close and Personal After you make a full disclosure of what you want and hear the colorist’s suggestions, then ask about his/her experience and training. Colorists who continue to learn are constantly growing and will grow with you. Also, be sure to follow each colorist you see on Instagram so you can see examples of their work.
Tip #5: Follow Your Instincts Now that you’ve done your research, eliminate any colorist who doesn’t seem to be a fantastic fit. Next, evaluate the remaining candidates and choose the one who really gets you, as a person. In the end, that’s what finding your color soul mate is about.
